What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, is a cosmetic procedure designed to treat gynecomastia, a condition characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue. This condition can affect men of all ages and may result from hormonal changes, genetics, weight gain, or the use of certain medications. Gynecomastia surgery reduces excess fat and glandular tissue to create a flatter, more sculpted chest, helping men achieve a more masculine and defined appearance.

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

Ideal candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men who:

    •    Have persistent breast enlargement that does not respond to diet or exercise

    •    Are in good overall health and maintain a stable weight

    •    Experience self-consciousness or discomfort due to the appearance of their chest

    •    Have realistic expectations about the procedure and are seeking a permanent solution

The Procedure

    1.    Consultation:

    •    During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your condition, discuss your goals, and recommend the best surgical approach. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the surgery.

    2.    Surgical Technique:

    •    Liposuction: In cases where excess fatty tissue is the primary cause, liposuction is used to remove the fat through small incisions.

    •    Excision: If glandular breast tissue or excess skin needs to be removed, an excision technique is used. The incisions are typically made around the areola or in a concealed part of the chest.

    •    Combination Approach: Some patients benefit from a combination of liposuction and excision to achieve optimal results.

    3.    Duration: The surgery generally lasts 1-2 hours, and is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Recovery and Aftercare

    •    Initial Recovery: Most patients can return home the same day. Swelling and bruising are common, and compression garments may be recommended to aid in healing.

    •    Return to Activity: Light activities can typically be resumed within a week, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks.

    •    Long-Term Results: Final results are usually visible within a few months as the swelling subsides, revealing a more masculine chest contour.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, gynecomastia surgery comes with some risks, including:

    •    Bleeding or infection

    •    Changes in nipple sensation

    •    Scarring

    •    Asymmetry or irregular contours

Dr. Briley takes every precaution to minimize risks and ensure a safe and successful outcome.
